Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes


This book called Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is based on the life of a real little girl who lived in Japan from 1943 to 1955. She was in Hiroshima when the U.S. Air Force dropped an atom bomb on that city in an attempt to end World War II. Ten years later she died as a result of radiation from the bomb. Her courage made Sadako a heroine to children in Japan. This is the story of Sadako.

Sadako is a type of girl who had confidence in herself and never liked feeling sad, and on one day at the hospital she was hurting inside but did not show sad emotions on front of her family and friends. Sadako was in the hospital for 2 weeks dying, but she did not lose hope her best friend came by and told her about a fairytale and then she gave her 1 golden paper crane she listened to her best friend about fairytales and this fairytale is that if she makes a thousand of paper cranes she can get one wish from the gods to become healthy again. So as are result of her confidence she started making paper cranes the first one she got was a golden one. Everyday at the hospital her family tried to cheer her up by giving her gifts, and she received a doll of one of her family. At the end she only made 644 paper cranes, as result she died.

Sadako Sasaki died on October the 25th her friends' folded 356 paper cranes more so that a thousand were buried with Sadako. In a way she got her wish. She will live on in the hearts of people for a long time. After the funeral the class collected Sadako's letters and published in a book. They called it Kokeshi, after the doll they had given to Sadako while she was in the hospital.
