Charlie is always trying to make his Ma not feeling worried about him all the time. Charlie Feehan's dad died of spanish flu, which was eating his dad's body for about four days, while Charlie and his Ma was sitting beside him. On the first day Charlie knew that his dad would die soon for the stench of death hung thick in the air. Charlie has boots and every time he looks at it or wear it, he will always remember his dad because it's his dad's boots. He gets money from running and doing jobs for Squizzy Taylor. But the job soons get dangerous as a war breaks out between Richmond and Fitzroy. He quits the job and decides to compete in a running event. He wins the event by making bids and earns a lot of money.
